Investigators have now confirmed the identity of the man who was killed by an angry mob in St Catherine after he allegedly attempted to rape a woman. A relative of the deceased visited the Linstead Police Station on Wednesday and confirmed that he is Javori Dunbar. He is a 25-year-old, also known as Jeff, and comes from the Barewood District in Montego Bay, St James.
Dunbar was killed in the area of Bermaddy on Friday, February 28. Reports say that his death stemmed from an incident on February 27, when he reportedly assaulted a woman. He is accused of trying to rape the woman, who narrowly escaped the ordeal. During her escape, she sounded an alarm, alerting residents that someone was trying to rape her.
Community members rushed to her aid, and the police were called to the scene. When officers arrived, a search operation ensued, but Dunbar had fled the area. He returned to the community and was killed when a group of residents spotted him.
They attacked him with various objects around 8 p.m.; he was beaten and chopped before police arrived at the scene. He sustained various injuries across his body, including a cut on his head. He was taken to the Linstead Community Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about rape cases in the country. Data from the Jamaica Constabulary Force shows that between January 1 and February 28, 2026, a total of 86 rape cases were reported islandwide. This represents a decline when compared to the same period in 2025, when 106 cases were recorded nationally.
Authorities say 13 rape cases have been recorded across St Catherine since the start of the year, compared with 12 incidents during the corresponding period last year.
