A policeman is on the run after shooting his ex-wife and a female bystander in Cidade Nova, Brazil. Sergeant Ednei of the Military Police of Amazonas shot his ex-wife, 36-year-old Fernanda, during a dispute, which reports say stemmed from jealousy.
The attack unfolded in the early hours of Monday, September 1, in the North Zone of Manaus. According to investigators, the shooting began after a heated argument on Rua Itiquira. Reports say the sergeant had a dispute with his ex-wife at a party that had started on Sunday afternoon and stretched into the night. Tensions escalated quickly, reportedly because Fernanda had entered into a new romantic relationship, a fact that seemed to ignite Ednei’s anger.
As the confrontation intensified, Fernanda attempted to flee. Video shows her running outside, desperately trying to shield herself behind a parked car. Ednei pursued her relentlessly and fired a shot into her back, leaving her injured on the ground. Onlookers caught the incident on camera but were targeted when they spoke out against the domestic violence.
According to reports, bystanders gathered on the upper floor of the house shouted at the officer, pleading with him to stop and not take Fernanda’s life. Instead of backing down, the sergeant reportedly turned his gun toward them and fired several shots. One of those bullets struck a woman in the arm.
The footage continues to show the person filming ducking for cover as shots are fired in their direction. The sergeant, according to reports, pressed on, climbing a ladder in what appeared to be an attempt to reach the people on the balcony.
The frightening scene ended abruptly when a police patrol car arrived at the location. Realising that officers were present, Ednei fled the scene. Officers pursued Ednei, and the chase led to a shootout. However, the sergeant eluded the police. As of now, his whereabouts remain unknown.
Fernanda and the bystander injured in the attack were taken to Dr Platão Araújo Hospital and Emergency Centre. While both women survived, their conditions have not yet been disclosed.
The case has since been taken up by the Specialised Police Station for Crimes Against Women (DECCM) and the Specialised Police Station for Homicide and Kidnapping (DEHS). A formal request has been made for the preventive arrest of Sergeant Ednei.
