Dancehall artiste Rajah Wild switched things up for his latest song, Overflow. Instead of his typical grimy style that promotes a gangster lifestyle, he reflected on his sins and spoke about God in a church. While expressing that he is living his life to the fullest, he adds that he is not committing the worst sins.
The song, produced by Rvssian through Head Concussion Records, was released on Christmas Day, December 25. The single dropped with a music video and debuted in YouTube’s trending chart at No. 29.
The song sparked controversy online due to church scenes that are included in the music video. In the music video, Rajah enters a church where a congregation is gathered and a choir awaits him. Rajah goes to the altar and sings with the choir.
The music video amassed over 58,000 views on YouTube within 19 hours along with mixed responses on social media. After Questime shared a clip of the song on Instagram, negative remarks flooded the post. Some people expressed that it was “blasphemy” for him to be performing dancehall in the church, especially with his “sinful” brand.
One social media user on Instagram questioned, “So u really go Ina CHURCH with this NONSENSE?” Another social media user said, “When will we bring back morals and principles in Jamaica? What is this?”
However, some comments defended the song, such as one that said, “This song is a definition of “come as you are” not even one explicit word.”
Rvssian responded to the negative feedback by telling social media users that they are sinning by judging. He stated that the song is meant to highlight that everyone sins and the first step in the right direction is acknowledging God.
“All who in the commented judging. Uno not considered a “sinner”? Because firstly. You judging is a sin. Matthew 7:1. The whole point of us making this song is. No matter if you is a police. Doctor. Lawyer. School teacher. We are all sinners and have sinned. First step is acknowledging God is real. So all who say “who really let him in church?” You more than any a we?”
