A man allegedly choked his partner and fired a gun during an altercation between them and another man. The incident reportedly stemmed from cheating allegations and ended with the woman and her alleged outside companion being involved in a car crash on Saturday.
According to the Jamaica Star, 28-year-old Travis Palmer now faces several charges after the violent incident. Palmer, a security guard from New Harbour Village in Old Harbour, St Catherine, reportedly attacked a woman and a man inside a parked Subaru. While the local news outlet did not mention how Palmer knows the female, additional context provided by Jamaican Display alleges that they are in a relationship.
The Jamaica Star reported that Palmer saw the vehicle around 2:00 a.m. on Waterford Parkway in Portmore. The woman said to be his partner was sitting in the passenger’s seat while her male companion sat behind the steering wheel.
It is alleged that Palmer abruptly entered the vehicle from the passenger’s side and proceeded to strangle the woman. The report also says he brandished his licensed firearm, a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol, during the struggle and aimed it at the occupants of the vehicle. However, when he discharged the weapon, the bullet did not strike anyone.
The media said he also bit the woman’s male companion on the hand. At some point during the tussle, the vehicle, which remained in drive, began moving and drove away, according to the Jamaica Star. The car ultimately slammed into a railing, but no one was injured. The woman and the man fled away from the scene and later reported the matter to the police.
On Monday, Palmer showed up at the police station to turn himself in, and police confiscated his firearm, along with 44 rounds of ammunition. After he was interviewed by the police in the presence of his attorney, he was charged with several offences, including unauthorised possession of a firearm and ammunition, assault, and discharging a firearm in public. His first court appearance has been arranged for July 1 at the St Catherine Parish Court.
Additionally, the Instagram news page Jamaican Display claimed that Palmer had suspected his partner was cheating with the man she was found with. He had reportedly warned her about him before. This prompted him to feel enraged when he spotted them together.
Jamaican Display stated that during an argument between the three, the woman sided with her male companion, further adding to Palmer’s frustration. This led to a physical altercation and a firearm discharge.
