Grief has settled over a family in St Elizabeth, following the tragic death of a nine-year-old boy who is believed to have drowned. The child, identified as Samuel Clarke, was at his home in the Long Hill community on Thursday afternoon when the incident happened.
Reports indicate that Samuel, who attended Goshen Primary School, was being supervised by his sibling. The two brothers were home alone together sometime around 5:00 p.m.
While the sibling remained inside, Samuel was reportedly outside playing with a ball. It is understood that the ball fell into a water tank on the premises. Reports say Samuel attempted to retrieve the ball by entering the tank but did not resurface.
Before entering the tank, Samuel had removed his clothes, and it was those garments that raised the suspicion of a passerby. The individual reportedly saw the clothes placed near the tank and went to investigate the area.

When the passerby looked inside the tank, the child was discovered unresponsive in the water. His body was quickly removed, and he was later pronounced dead. Reports say that the body had since been transported to the morgue. Authorities are now awaiting a post-mortem examination to be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
The news of his death comes amid the Easter holiday. This has led some Jamaicans to point out what they see as a disturbing pattern. Persons who responded to the tragedy online noted that incidents involving children, particularly drownings, appear to occur frequently during holiday periods when youngsters spend more time at home or outdoors.
Others expressed sorrow and disbelief at the loss of such a young life. Many people online extended condolences to the grieving family, describing the development as heartbreaking and difficult to process. Others raised concerns about supervision and general safety around open water sources, especially for children.
Individuals have also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to take additional precautions to prevent similar tragedies.
