A man was shot and killed by the police after he allegedly tried to disarm an officer. The incident occurred on Thursday night, March 6, 2025, in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. An investigation has since been launched into the incident.
It has been reported that the police were conducting a snap raid at the time of the incident. The purpose of the operation was to find an individual who is a suspect in a murder involving a man on Wednesday, according to the Jamaica Gleaner. The report stated that the snap raid was done at around 7:15 p.m.
The Jamaica Gleaner, citing a report from the authorities, detailed that the police saw a man who matched the description of the suspect in the vicinity of a bar. Upon seeing the man, the police pursued the suspect.
However, the suspect seemingly changed his course when he noticed the police. The report stated that the man allegedly took a route along Oxford Road that involved going through a gate and into a house when he realised that he was being followed by the police.
The police continued to pursue him and went into the house after he did. Upon finding the man in the house, the police addressed him, telling him the reason for their presence.
However, things reportedly became physical after the man grabbed hold of one of the police officers’ guns. The police and the man reportedly got into a tussle. During the tussle, the man allegedly hit the policeman. This led to the man being shot and injured by another officer.
The man was subsequently transported to the Spanish Town Hospital but was later pronounced dead, per the report. The identity of the man is unknown, as that was not disclosed by the authorities. Following the incident, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) launched an investigation into the man’s death.
