A taxi operator was fatally shot on Princess Street in downtown Kingston this morning following a heated confrontation with another driver who is licensed to carry a firearm.
The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Carlo Ellis, otherwise known as “Fowly,” of Fourth Street, Kingston 12. Reports indicate that the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. when Ellis approached the other cabbie, who was seated inside his vehicle, and an argument ensued.
According to police, Ellis physically assaulted the man, striking him several times in the face. Fearing for his life, the licensed firearm holder reportedly drew his Glock 17 pistol and fired a single round, hitting Ellis in the head. Ellis died at the scene.
Investigators revealed that the shooting stemmed from a long-standing dispute between the two men over passenger pickups near the Kingston Public Hospital. Intelligence gathered also suggested that Ellis had previously issued threats to the other cab driver.
The firearm has since been seized, and the shooter was taken into police custody as the investigation continues.
