Officials have reportedly released the confession of the alleged shooter connected to Charlie Kirk’s murder case. Accused gunman Tyler Robinson allegedly admitted to killing the conservative activist with a single bullet during a private conversation with his roommate, who prosecutors identified as Robinson’s romantic partner and a transgender woman.
Court documents detail a chilling exchange that unfolded just hours after the fatal shooting at Utah Valley University on September 10. According to prosecutors, Robinson sent a text to his roommate urging them to check under a keyboard. Hidden there was a handwritten note that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”
The discovery immediately raised alarm for the roommate, who texted back, “You weren’t the one who did it, right????” Robinson allegedly replied with a blunt admission: “I am. I’m sorry.”
Robinson reportedly went on to tell the roommate that he had intended to retrieve the murder weapon, a rifle, so he had stayed near the campus. “To be honest, I had hoped to keep this secret till I die of old age. I’m sorry to involve you,” one message read.
Despite the confession, the roommate did not immediately alert authorities. For days, police continued their manhunt without knowing Robinson’s identity. It was not until late Thursday night, after his arrest, that the roommate fully cooperated with investigators.
According to reports, Robinson had been planning the killing for “a bit over a week”, and he wrote to his roommate that he had “enough of [Kirk’s] hatred”, claiming, “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” He also made light of his actions in bizarre texts about “engraving bullets” and internet memes.
Robinson also urged his partner to stay silent, warning against media appearances and instructing them to “ask for a lawyer” if police ever made contact. He later asked the roommate to delete their entire conversation, noting that his father requested photos of the rifle in his possession after federal authorities released images of the murder weapon.
On Tuesday, prosecutors formally filed seven charges against Robinson, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, tampering with a witness, and felony discharge of a firearm.
One additional charge of committing a violent offence in the presence of a child was also included. Officials confirmed they intend to pursue the death penalty. Robinson is set to appear in court on Tuesday, where the charges will be formally read, and legal proceedings will begin.
