Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel is all set for his May 31 performance in Trinidad after several days of controversy. The drama surrounding his show stemmed from Trinidadian authorities imposing restrictions that garnered backlash from fans.
While he was given a little more freedom amid criticism, the officials have made it clear that Vybz Kartel is only allowed to enter the country under strict policies. The special permit granted allows him to attend and perform at the One Caribbean Unity Music Festival this Saturday, marking his first show in 15 years.
Aside from the momentous occasion, the dancehall artiste, known globally as “The Worl’ Boss”, is allowed to remain in Trinidad and Tobago for seven days, starting May 27, according to Jacho Entertainment sources cited by Overtime Media on May 28.
According to the Jamaica Star, the document confirms that the artiste is exempt from the usual work permit and visa requirements for the purpose of this event. However, the permission comes with several conditions, including a security bond. Kartel is required to provide a security deposit, though the exact amount was not disclosed.
Additionally, his movements in the country are restricted. Where social activities are concerned, he is only allowed to participate in radio interviews during specific hours on May 28. He is barred from taking part in activities such as crime awareness events, panel discussions, community walkthroughs, or meetings with officials.
The permit also warns that Kartel must avoid making statements or engaging in actions that could be seen as promoting gang culture, in line with the Anti-Gang Act. His setlist must exclude any songs that could be considered offensive, including Good Like Jesus. Additionally, Kartel will bear the cost of state-provided security and other related expenses.
Jonathan Gomez, head organiser of the One Caribbean Unity Music Festival, welcomed the news of Kartel’s clearance as a significant moment for the event. He expressed excitement about hosting the Jamaican star, noting that fans can expect an unforgettable experience at Queen’s Park Savannah. Gomez encouraged music lovers across the region to come out and be part of a historic night, as Kartel prepares to deliver a performance that’s been years in the making.
