Three women ended up in the hospital after a serious crash along Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston early Monday morning, when a truck overturned following a collision with an SUV.
Initial reports suggest the crash involved a truck carrying marl and a Toyota RAV4 with three women inside. It’s believed the truck may have run a red light before slamming into the SUV as it was travelling along the roadway.
Footage from a nearby vehicle captured moments after the impact, showing the truck sliding along the road before tipping over onto its side. The scene quickly drew the attention of other motorists. Emergency responders, including police and firefighters, arrived shortly after and began assisting those involved.
The SUV was badly damaged, and the driver had to be pulled from the wreckage. Rescue teams worked carefully to free her before she and the two passengers were taken to the Kingston Public Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have reported that the driver sustained serious injuries but remains in stable condition. There has been no clear update on the extent of the other two women’s injuries, but all three are receiving medical care. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries to the truck driver.
The crash caused a buildup of traffic along the busy roadway as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. The overturned truck and scattered debris had to be removed before traffic could return to normal. Police are still looking into what led to the crash and are expected to confirm whether the truck did, in fact, run the red light.
There continues to be concern about road safety in Jamaica. Authorities are consistently urging motorists to adhere to road regulations as the country continues to record road accidents, many of which are fatal. This one comes hours apart from another crash that occurred along Bog Walk Gorge and claimed the life of a 17-year-old, who was driving after the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Rio Cobre below.
