A mother and daughter were shot dead in Rocky Point, Clarendon, on Monday night. Along with the double murder, a man was injured in the shooting incident, which occurred at about 8:45 p.m. The trio were shot at a bar, where three gunmen opened fire, according to a report.
The mother was later identified as 61-year-old Norma Spence, and her daughter is 41-year-old Kerry Ann Scott. The mother and daughter are reported to be fish vendors and also business partners with an establishment located on the fishing beach in the community.
Following the incident, the injured man was transported to the hospital, where he continues to receive treatment. Spence and Scott were pronounced dead when they arrived at the hospital.
The bodies of the mother and daughter were filmed by onlookers who showed up moments after the incident occurred. They were seen some feet away from each other, lying face down on the ground. Up to about 11:05 p.m. Monday, police were still processing the scene. Authorities have not yet established a motive behind the attack.
The double murder occurred more than two weeks after a separate incident in St Andrew, in which another mother and daughter were shot during an ambush. The mother survived that attack, but her daughter, later identified as 26-year-old Maya Ashley, died. The incident happened outside their home in Patrick City just as they returned from the airport on January 23.
Ashley had picked up her mother from the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston in the early morning. Reports say they arrived at home on Appleton Avenue at about 4:45 a.m. While still in the vehicle, Ashley was fatally shot. Her mother, who is reportedly 49 years old, suffered gunshot wounds and had to be hospitalised. There has been no update about her condition. Police launched an investigation into the incident and are searching for the mother’s husband, whom they have listed as a person of interest.
