A man was killed by an angry mob of residents after he allegedly attempted to rape a woman in the area of Bermaddy, St Catherine. The man was killed on Saturday, a day after the alleged incident with the woman.
The ordeal began around 8 p.m. on Friday when the man allegedly assaulted the woman, according to reports. Though details of the assault have not been released, police say the man also tried to rape the woman, but she managed to escape. While desperately running away, the woman yelled “Rape”, alerting residents. Several people in the community responded to her and offered assistance, but the man fled the community.
Police were informed, and a group of officers visited the area, but they were unable to find the man. It appears that residents had put out a “Rapist alert” with his photograph on digital platforms, urging community members to help find the man.

The man was killed when he later returned to the community. He was spotted about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and residents reacted by launching an attack. Several community members proceeded to beat and chop him, according to reports.
A disturbing video of the angry mob attacking him has surfaced online. In the video, the man is on the ground being repeatedly struck by residents who have weaponised different objects. He has visible cuts and bruises as they continue to hit him all over his body. When the off-camera residents start targeting his head, he attempts to shield it with his hands, but he does not retaliate.
During the attack, he also sustained a gash to the head. After the incident, he was transported to the Linstead Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released the identity of the man.
The incident is now being probed by the Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch.
