A woman was confronted and beaten for allegedly committing theft. Though she denied the accusations, an angry mob of Manacapuru residents in Amazonas, Brazil, continued to punish her.
The unsettling incident, captured in a now-viral video circulating on July 2, shows a woman identified by the nickname “Ligeirinha” being physically assaulted by several individuals in a rural area. She is wearing a black t-shirt paired with yellow shorts.
According to a report, locals claim she was caught stealing, though no evidence has been presented in the footage.
In the video, “Ligeirinha” is seen on the ground crying and pleading with the crowd for compassion. While sobbing, she attempted to explain her innocence and shift blame to someone else, whom she identified as Suci. Despite her emotional pleas, the group ignored her and continued the attack.
At least two of the residents were armed with sticks. One man, holding a wooden stick, delivered several blows to her legs and arms as she curled up in defence. When she tried to stand, she was forced back down and struck again. Multiple voices in the background offered no help, with some allegedly appearing to cheer on the punishment.
The video does not show any intervention from local authorities, and it remains unclear what led to the accusations against “Ligeirinha”. The footage ends with her breaking free and fleeing the scene while members of the group chase after her. According to the report, the woman managed to escape without further harm.
The footage has raised some concern and anger online. Some are calling the attack inhumane regardless of the allegations. Still, others have defended the mob’s actions, citing frustration over repeated thefts in the area.
At this time, there is no confirmation of whether any formal charges have been filed against the woman or if law enforcement is investigating those involved in the attack.
