A 6-year-old girl has been hospitalised with severe injuries after her mother repeatedly struck her in the head with a hammer. Her mom launched at her with the hammer inside their home in Kentucky last Thursday, June 19. The accused, Zeinab Abdi, had reportedly intended to murder her child but was stopped when her son intervened.
The horrifying incident unfolded just after midnight in the Park Duvalle neighbourhood of Louisville. Police were called to the scene, particularly at about 12:49 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the child inside the home, suffering from multiple blunt-force injuries to her head.
She was rushed to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. She is being treated for severe skull fractures and brain haemorrhages.
According to investigators, the child’s mother admitted to losing control during a fit of rage. In her interview with police, the 40-year-old mother explained that her daughter frequently displayed anger issues and struggled to control herself.
However, on this particular night, it was Abdi who acted out violently, allegedly hitting her daughter in the head with a hammer “an unknown amount of times. ” She reportedly told police that she was not sure how many times she struck the child. She also did not specify her reason for attacking the child at that moment.
Abdi’s son was present at the scene when she attacked the little girl and intervened. Police reports state that he managed to physically restrain his mother during the attack. While struggling against him, she reportedly yelled, “Let me finish her,” indicating her intent to continue the assault. His quick action is believed to have saved his younger sister’s life.
Abdi was arrested on the spot and booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. She now faces a charge of attempted murder. Her bond has been set at $500,000, and she currently has no legal representation. The mother is expected to make her first court appearance on June 30 at a preliminary hearing.
