Erica Mena, Spice’s rival and former castmate on Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta, is calling out the public for being biased as she speaks out again about her controversial “blue monkey” comment. The remark was a jab at dancdehall artiste Spice during a heated dispute and landed Mena in boiling water.
After calling Spice a “blue monkey” during a heated argument in 2023, Mena faced widespread backlash, with many calling her comment racially offensive. Mena was subsequently kicked off the series, and many supported the show’s decision.
Mena, in a recent episode of The Nene Leakes Show, now argues that public criticism against her was inconsistent compared to how others have been treated, including Spice. Mena steered the conversation towards what she believes was a double standard.
She admitted the term has an ugly history but insisted her intent was tied to appearance, not skin colour. “She came at me about my son,” Mena explained, describing how tensions escalated in the moment.
Mena went further, referencing a moment from Spice’s career that she believes contradicts the outrage directed at her. She pointed to the 2018 stunt in which Spice appeared with lighter skin and blonde hair, later revealed as part of a campaign tied to her song Black Hypocrisy, which addressed colourism.
Mena called out the public for having “selective outrage”, indicating that Spice did not receive the same condemnation when she did the stunt.
“People have selective outrage because this is the woman you guys are going so hard for but she literally went viral or should I say had a whole media campaign about becoming a white woman, and how proud she was to bleach her skin,” Mena said.
While Mena has previously apologised for her comment, her recent remarks suggest she feels her side of the story has been overshadowed.
