Churchgoer Cora Thompson was shot and killed just outside the doors of the New Testament Church of God on Water Lane in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday.
The day started like a regular Wednesday with fasting services underway. Thompson, who is well known for selling books outside the church during services, took her usual spot near the entrance. However, at 2:00 p.m., gunfire erupted.
Worshippers inside were in the middle of prayer and praise when the sound of several explosions rang out, abruptly interrupting the service. Some of the occupants inside the church were initially confused when the first few shots were heard. Seconds later, they realised one of their own had been shot just steps away.
Reports indicate that Thompson was shot five times as she sat outside. She collapsed within the church compound and was later pronounced dead. After she was taken away, her blood could still be seen just at the entrance.

Many congregants were left distressed after the brazen attack that breached their sanctuary. Pastor Bishop Ruel Robinson told the Jamaica Observer that the emotional toll on the church has been heavy, noting that members are still trying to come to terms with what happened.
“We will have to pray for each other,” he said, adding that Thompson’s murder affects the entire church.
According to Robinson, support systems are now being put in place for the members of the church. The church will also offer prayers and support to the family of the deceased.

Robinson described Thompson as a “quality lady” and a vibrant, cooperative and supportive member of their community. He said she was a people person who interacted well with nearly everyone.
He also condemned the act, stating, “It is obviously a loss of fear for God… It shows a spirit of disregard for God and the sanctuary.”
Investigators have not yet established a motive behind the murder. Initial reports say a man drove up to the church in a small van, exited, and shot Thompson. Further reports from eyewitnesses say a man was seen running away from the churchyard after the shooting. The suspect reportedly ran in the direction of Dome Street.
Senior Superintendent Eron Samuels indicated that the incident is deeply upsetting, and police are working hard to find the gunman.
