Graphic footage of the crash that killed a police constable and an electrician in St Thomas has emerged. The pair were travelling along Seaforth Main Road when two vehicles collided on Tuesday night.
The first deceased has been identified as Keron Kellyman, a 25-year-old serving in the Jamaica Constabulary Force. He was assigned to the Highway Patrol Division. The second deceased is Dwight Robinson, a 31-year-old electrician who lived in the Whitehall district in St. Thomas.
According to reports, Kellyman was heading towards Seaforth after leaving Morant Bay. While he was driving a Toyota Isis with multiple passengers, the reports have not confirmed the vehicle that Robinson had occupied. The other vehicle involved in the crash was a Honda Accord that was occupied by several people and heading in the opposite direction.
The collision occurred around 10:45 p.m. According to circulating claims, the collision was caused by an attempt to avoid a pothole. The driver of the Honda Accord came upon the pothole while entering the vicinity of Wyatt Housing Scheme and reportedly swerved the vehicle away from it.
In doing so, the vehicle crossed over into the next lane just as the officer’s car was approaching. This resulted in the vehicles colliding head-on. The impact caused Kellyman’s car to overturn and fall into a gully along the roadway.
When emergency personnel rushed to the scene, Kellyman was found with severe injuries to his face. Officials confirmed his death on the spot at 11:10 p.m. Shortly before midnight, authorities pronounced Robinson dead as well. He had sustained a large laceration that stretched from his forehead to his right ear and chin.
Four occupants from both vehicles were also sustained serious injuries in the crash. Reports say two came from each vehicle, and all four were transported to the hospital and admitted in stable condition. Some of the injured underwent surgery, according to officials.
Police say they are probing the incident.
